Week 5

Part One: Support and Comment on Teammates' Goals (30 minutes)

Visit at least two of your team members' blogs on educational goals and career goals last week. Compare theirs to your own. Provide comments, encouragement, and suggestions to their goals as if you are their trusted coach. Please provide the links of the students you commented on in your learning journal or screenshots, of your comments if you had issues posting your comment to their blog.

Part Two: Possible Capstone Ideas (30 minutes)

After viewing at least 3 presentations of Capstone, list three possible capstone projects you might choose to do at the end of your study. These sample project ideas which you may or may not pursue.

 1. I've been a huge table top gaming fan, and a friend of mine (who is also a computer science major) have wanted to make out own video game some day. While learning, I thought that making an app to support a more advanced table top game, or at least provide an easy digital format (such as dndbeyond for Dungeons and Dragons) would be a very fun project. And based on the complexity of some of the other capstone projects, I think it would be comparable.

2. When I was younger, I struggled with debt, and used some apps like Mint and such to create a budget, but I always felt like even when they would streamline features, they would often feel cumbersome, and were behind where the technology was. I think building a fast and easily operable budget tracking system would be a fun project.

3. Seeing that several people built small video games, and that a couple of my group mates are interested in video games, I think it might be possible to pursue a small video game of our own.

Part Three: Keep Up With Your Learning Journal (30 minutes)

Update the learning journal to include what have you learned from this week's activities, including if you are thinking about internship or graduate programs.

This week I got a bit of a refresher on video editing, and learned about some new and easy tools that are available. I've done a little bit of video editing before, both as a hobby and professionally, but not for some time.

Additionally I interviewed a co-worker in the software engineering department where I work, and picked his brain a bit about what it's like, and mentioned that I wouldn't mind working for him once I graduate.

At this point I'm not really sure that I'm interested in an internship--I'm already a bit hazy on how transitioning from my group to another at the same employer works, but I don't think internship is the right path for me. And as far as graduate school goes, that's another big uncertainty for me. I don't foresee it happening in the next 5 years, and I don't get the impression my employer pushes their engineers to pursue the higher degree. My long-term goals aren't looking that far out just yet.
